DEEP DIVE: CHAIR WEAVING

For our first DEEP DIVE, we visit Blindes Arbejde in Nordvest, where brooms, brushes and woven chairs are made by hand by artisans with visual impairments.

Here, touch and sound guide the making process. The artisans feel when the tension is right, how the material sits, and when the work is finished. Their methods offer a different perspective on craftsmanship and on how we use our senses when making.

The morning begins with an introduction to Blindes Arbejde and a tour of the workshop, where we’ll get a closer look at broom making, brush binding and chair weaving. Afterwards, the artisans will guide us through a chair weaving session, giving us the chance to try the technique ourselves and experience the process through touch.

We’ll round off the visit together before heading for an optional lunch nearby, included in the price.

Blindes Arbejde

Blindes Arbejde has worked with craft since 1929, creating meaningful work for blind and visually impaired people. Their practice centres on brush binding, broom making, weaving and chair weaving, all built on material knowledge and touch. Today it's a commercial foundation: any surplus goes back into the business to create more jobs for blind and visually impaired people, and their aim is to raise awareness of what they call "de kloge hænder", the skilled hands.

Please note

The session is taught primarily in Danish. We'll do our best to help non-Danish speakers with translations.

What is DEEP DIVE?

Focused, small-group sessions where participants work closely with specialists to explore materials, methods, and ideas in depth. Through hands-on experimentation and guided feedback, you’ll develop prototypes and gain new insights across disciplines.

Designed for students and early-stage creatives, these sessions provide time for immersion, skill-building, and meaningful exchange. Application for a spot is required, and spots are limited to ensure a dedicated and collaborative learning environment.
